T171 You, Your Computer and the Net
About This Section - The Internet
This section is based on Module 3 of T171, as presented in 2000.
After completing this module, students were expected to demonstrate an understanding
of, or a familiarity with:
- The history of how the Internet was conceived, specified, designed and
constructed.
- How the technology behind the Internet works
- The Internet's significance, power and potential
- Some of the personalities whose thinking and work
led, directly or indirectly, to the creation of the Internet and the
World Wide Web.
- The role played by the key institutions in the
story - for example, MIT, ARPA, RAND, the National Physical Laboratory
and CERN.
- The distinctive subculture which has grown around
the Internet.
The three themes of the module were:
- Institutions
- Personalities
- Technologies
