Design Software

The problem with any discussion of software is that it is quickly outdated. I am just going to provide a list of software that I have used to design these pages. Most of these are at least four years old, but I see little point in spending money when these can do a more than an adequate job. I should also point you to the W3C website for listings.http://www.w3.org/Style/CSS/

  • Dreamweaver - Still regarded as one of the best web authoring tools on the market. I have used UltraDev and MX, but I still use version 4. Old maybe, but it does the job and writes very clean HTML (unlike MS FrontPage). It can also be modified to write XHTML, go here to see how it can be done.
  • Notepad - Free and installed with Windows. A good way to learn any code or markup is to use a text editor.
  • Fireworks - Macromedia again. Great piece of kit for all web graphics.
  • Photoshop - Industry standard graphics software for print and the Web, from Adobe. Expensive, but the best that money can buy.
  • TopStyle - Bradbury's CSS editor. The current version also edits XHTML and HTML.
  • HTML Kit - A new addition to this list and a really good one. What is more, it's free! A large variety of plug-ins are also made avaliable.
